If you are on any social media platform at all, I'm sure you've noticed the "Manifesting Money", "Law of Attraction", and "Manifesting Spouses" trend. It's everywhere!
And if you're a Christian and you have digested some material on this topic, you have probably had one of these two thoughts;
"The law of attraction is okay to use because it's obviously rooted in biblical principles..."
or,
"I don't really trust this because they keep saying the ‘Universe’ instead of God, and they are misquoting a lot of scriptures and not giving credit to God."
Well, whichever person you are, your noisy (nosy!) neighbor is here to provide some good advice! We want to provide those who are searching for truth with a solid Christian perspective on why they should not only be careful of such trends, but should altogether avoid delving into the dark abyss of New Age Doctrine.
Firstly, lets be clear that these teachings are only offering to do something for you that God has already promised to do. Honestly, I believe God is probably so annoyed when Christians jump on the "new age" bandwagon. They wouldn't believe in His promises and wait on Him to provide, but they will believe in new age ‘gurus’ and wait on the "universe" to "manifest" something. They won't read His word, which is living, powerful, and chock-full of active promises, but they will
purchase expensive new age books by all different (mere) people and read them cover to cover. Please, do not be that kind of Christian!
Okay, let’s do a little unpacking. On the surface, the law of attraction/ manifestation is attractive and tempting because it appeals directly to our fleshly desires. If you want a man, manifest him. If you want some money, manifest it. It is the beginning of a very slippery slope of materialism, flesh fulfillment, and gratification. As it says in 1 John 2:15,
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
This classic temptation technique is obviously very effective on people, because Satan used this to tempt Jesus after his forty day fast in Mark chapter 4.
He knew that Jesus was hungry (starving!), and thus appealed to his fleshly desire to eat by telling him to enjoy instant gratification and "turn the stones to bread." (Note, the devil wants YOU to entangle yourself in your own words and God-given ability to speak things into existence!)
But Jesus, being strong in his purpose, responded to the devil by saying,
"It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
This should be a very strong model to the Saints, that when we are faced with Satan's temptation to provide a "quick fix" to our problems, to the areas where we have hunger- we must remain steadfast in our trust in God.
Ironically, immediately after resisting the enemy 3 times Jesus was ministered to by the angels of God, who were on standby all along.
This indicates that God has already sent angels that will minister and provide for our needs, provided we resist the devil! But many never experience this because they cannot resist the sensual schemes of the enemy.
Also in this passage in Mark 4, God allows us to see that the devil has the power to gift people with all kinds of material things. In the text Satan tempted Jesus with the trifold temptation of the fulfillment of a hunger, an opportunity for spiritual leadership, and the power to hold tangible power and wealth. This is what the devil has in his hands to tempt us gullible humans with!
So, this leads us to a very important question concerning the law of attraction; when it comes to "manifesting things", and "attracting things" who is the actually blesser?
Well, I can clue you in on the answer according to the Word of the Lord- If you are not praying to God and asking HIM to provide, but are instead appealing to the "universe" and speaking to the "powers that be", and spending your days "envisioning and meditating" your material desires,
its safe to say that God was not the blesser.
If that’s not enough for you, we can also look at the fruit of the blessing to determine the source.
It says in James 1:17 that
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
It says in
Proverbs 10:22 that
“The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.”
Proverbs 10:22
This means that if we see that a blessing is producing harmful things like drug habits, addiction, suicide, and spiritual death, it has not come from the hand of God.
This leads directly to our final thought and warning; that when you manifest things through other 'spiritual powers (re- satanic powers) ' and not through prayer, you are actually endangering the true destiny that God has for you.
See, God is a good father, and he loves and is protective of His children.
Because of this, God will not give you anything that he knows is too much for you to bear, or give you something when the timing of your best interest is not yet fulfilled. Instead, He provides a perfect timeline (while we throw a fit as children do) that will make you ready to receive His blessings, and use them to be a blessing to others. As you seek God, our source for all things, He will begin to reveal your purpose, your path, and also empower you to fulfill it.
Sounds amazing, right?
As He said in
Jeremiah 17:7-8;
“Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.”
And Matthew 7:7,
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”
So when it comes to meditation, don't meditate on your material desires, opening yourself up to dark spirits to rule and reign in you (Luke 22:3), but instead do
as Psalms 1:1 says,
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.”
This will cause you to bring forth MUCH FRUIT, in YOUR SEASON. For all the rest of those who manifest those quick blessings through ill-gotten means, they will be as the
chaff which the wind driveth away,
Proverbs 13:11
“Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.”
Which would you rather be: stable, strong, and prosperous like a great tree with deep roots, or depleted and sick by wicked blessings that don't last?
Your choice.
